PRIVATE PILOT LICENCE (PPL)

A private pilot licence (PPL) is a licence that allows the holder to pilot an aircraft as pilot-in-command or co-pilot when the aircraft is being operated in a private operation or the holder is receiving flying training. Once you have successfully gained your RPL and are comfortable to pilot an aircraft by yourself, you can look to taking passengers and flying a variety of larger aircraft in training towards your PPL and fly anywhere in Australia.

THEORY AND FLIGHT TRAINING

You must complete a combination of practical flight training and pass the PPL(A) theory exam to be able to hold a PPL. The subjects studied cover the following seven subjects: Flight Rules and Air Law, Aerodynamics, Meteorology, Navigation, Flight Planning, Human Factors and Engines and Systems.

During this training you initially learn how to fly an aircraft and you may even choose to achieve your Recreational Pilot Licence (RPL) during the course which allows you to carry passengers within 25nm of the airport of departure.

Once you’re competent in aircraft operations you then learn to prepare a flight plan, interpret weather, learn how to navigate, land on a variety of different surfaces, learn lost procedures, diversions, and emergency procedures as well as how to get yourself into and out of a range of airports.

For more information on how to obtain your PPL please visit the CASA website.
